Description: The ever-increasing reliance on electronic devices which utilize AC power highlights the problems associated with the unexpected loss of power from the electrical grid. In places where the electrical infrastructure is not well-developed, brown-outs can prove fatal when electronic medical instruments become unusable. Therefore, there is a need for inexpensive and reliable pure-sine wave inverters for use with medical devices in the underdeveloped world. This report documents the development of one component of an uninterruptible power supply, the DC-to-AC inverter. Through the use of analog signal processing techniques, a prototype which efficiently and accurately emulates the pure-sine wave power present on the power grid was created. The three-level PWM system within this report is created with the possibility of a feedback-regulated system to be implemented in the future.

A coordinated control strategy for voltage source converter (VSC) based MTDC transmission system applied to long-distance power transmission from large-scale wind farm is researched. By means of constructing a four-terminal system connecting two large-scale wind power bases with local power grid to send out power to faraway load center, the wind power converging and sending out by the proposed coordinated control strategy are implemented. Simulation results show that the proposed coordinated control strategy not only can improve the ability of reallocating power flow in VSC-MTDC transmission system under large disturbance, but also can make wind power base providing a certain power support to DC transmission network, thus the dynamic stability of power grid can be enhanced.

Description: This paper presents a PSCAD/EMTDC model of PV solar panels, the grid connected three phase voltage sourced inverter (VSI) and its controller system. The VSI control is implemented with current control loops. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is implemented to get the maximum output power for any given solar irradiation and temperature. This is integrated with the inverter control in such a way that the requirement of DC-DC converter is eliminated to harvest the maximum power. The inverter model also maintains near unity power factor regardless of the level of power output and maintains an acceptable level of current harmonics. Finally, the developed model is validated with the output of a commercially used PV module.
